The valley of dry bones in Ezekiel 37

In the vision, the Spirit of the Lord brought Ezekiel into a valley full of very dry bones. God asked whether they could live. Ezekiel answered that the Lord knew. God told him to speak his message to the bones. As Ezekiel obeyed, there was a sound and the bones joined together. Sinews, flesh, and skin covered them, but they did not yet have breath. (Ezekiel 37:1-8)

God then told Ezekiel to prophesy to the breath. Ezekiel did so, and breath entered the bodies. They lived and stood on their feet as a very great army. The artwork uses a small group to represent that much larger company. (Ezekiel 37:9-10)

What do the dry bones represent?

The passage gives its own explanation: the bones represent the whole house of Israel, who felt that their hope was lost. God promised to bring his people into their land and put his Spirit within them. Keep this explanation beside the pictures: this is a vision of God’s power to restore his people and give hope. (Ezekiel 37:11-14)

This summary is a shortened retelling in our own words, not a word-for-word Bible translation. Read the complete passage in your family’s Bible.

Color and talk together

  • What did Ezekiel see at the start of the vision?
  • What happened when he spoke the message God gave him?
  • What was still missing after the bodies had formed?
  • Who does God say the bones represent?
  • What hope did God give his people?

After coloring, place the four sheets in order and retell the vision together. For younger children, you can start with the final scene and discuss the people standing alive. Older children can find the corresponding verses and explain each stage.

Printing your coloring pages

Use the PDF downloads for printing and the WebP images for a quick on-screen preview. Choose A4 portrait for the original size. If you use US Letter paper, select Fit to page and check the preview so that the title and artwork stay inside the printable area. Plain white paper, crayons, and colored pencils work well.

Notes for parents and teachers

The first scenes use simplified bones and skeletons. The return of flesh and skin is described in the Bible but is not shown as a graphic transformation in these designs. The living figures wear simple robes as an artistic choice. Their clothing, the prophet’s appearance, the landscape, and the breeze lines are illustrations rather than details specified in the passage.

God speaks in the passage; the pictures do not give God a human appearance. The breeze marks in the third scene are a visual symbol for breath. The final picture represents the vision’s living company and does not depict a particular modern nation or military uniform.
