Read Genesis 15:1-6; 17:1-21; 21:1-8 for the complete account. The following is a shortened summary in our own words.
When Abram had no child to inherit from him, God promised that a son of his own would be his heir. God brought him outside and told him to look toward the sky and count the stars, if he could. His offspring would be like that. Abram believed the LORD.
Later, God changed Abram’s name to Abraham and Sarai’s name to Sarah. He promised that Sarah would bear a son and instructed Abraham to name him Isaac. God said he would establish his covenant with Isaac.
The LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. She gave birth to Isaac when Abraham was 100 years old. Abraham named the baby Isaac. Sarah spoke of the laughter God had brought her. When Isaac grew and was weaned, Abraham made a great feast.
Start with the stars picture and finish with the family feast. Ask children to tell you what changes between the pictures. They can draw stars on a separate sheet and talk about waiting, promises and thankfulness. Avoid promising that every wish will be answered in the same way.
The stars are a small symbolic selection, not a literal count of Abraham’s descendants. The new-names sheet is a portrait accompanying Genesis 17; it does not claim Sarah was present for Abraham’s conversation with God. The Bible describes a great feast, while the final image focuses on the family. Baby clothes, furniture and poses are illustrative.
