Read Genesis 18:1-16 for the complete account. The following is a shortened summary in our own words.
Genesis 18 opens by saying that the LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. He ran to meet them, bowed and offered water, rest beneath the tree and something to eat.
Abraham hurried into the tent and asked Sarah to prepare bread. He arranged for a calf to be prepared, then set curds, milk and the food before the visitors. He stood near them beneath the tree while they ate.
They asked where Sarah was. The promise was given that she would have a son at the appointed time. Sarah, listening at the tent entrance, laughed within herself because she and Abraham were old. The LORD asked why she laughed and whether anything was too hard for the LORD. When the men rose to leave toward Sodom, Abraham went with them to see them on their way.
Read the welcome and meal portions together, then put the five sheets in order. Invite children to think of a kind way to welcome an invited guest with a parent or teacher. Use paper plates for a pretend meal rather than adding complicated craft supplies.
Genesis 18 describes three men and identifies the LORD within the encounter. Genesis 19:1 subsequently calls the two arriving at Sodom angels. These pages therefore use “three visitors” rather than asserting that all three were angels. They have ordinary robes, without wings or halos. The welcome image includes Sarah as an illustrative household figure; the passage does not place her outside at that moment. The later listening scene places her at the tent entrance.
