Read Genesis 12:1-9 for the complete account. The following is a shortened summary in our own words.
God told Abram to leave his country, relatives and father’s house for a land God would show him. God promised to make him a great nation, bless him and make him a blessing. All the families of the earth would be blessed through him.
Abram went as the LORD had told him. He was 75 when he left Haran. Sarai, Lot, their possessions and the people they had acquired in Haran went with him. The departure picture shows three named travelers rather than the entire group.
They arrived in Canaan. At Shechem, near the oak of Moreh, the LORD appeared to Abram and promised the land to his offspring. Abram built an altar there. Later, between Bethel and Ai, he pitched his tent, built another altar and called on the LORD. He then continued toward the Negev.
Color the four scenes, then place them in order. On a separate sheet, draw a simple path from Haran to Canaan and use the pictures to retell the journey. Talk about what it means to trust God while making a big change.
The Bible uses the names Abram and Sarai at this point. Their names become Abraham and Sarah later in Genesis 17. The illustrations do not show God as a human figure. Tents, clothing, faces and landscape details are artistic choices; the fourth sheet illustrates the altar near Bethel, not the earlier altar at Shechem.
