Read Matthew 13:44 for the complete account. The following is a shortened summary in our own words.
Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. A man finds it and hides it again. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
This very short parable emphasizes the extraordinary value of the kingdom and the man’s joyful response. The treasure is not a promise that following Jesus will make someone financially wealthy.
Read the whole verse before using the pictures. The middle sheet represents selling possessions; the final sheet shows buying the field, not merely taking a chest away.
Lay out the three scenes and ask children to put them in order. Use a folded paper treasure chest to draw or write something they value, then discuss why Jesus describes God’s kingdom as worth more than possessions. Keep the conversation about the parable rather than asking a child to give away belongings.
The verse does not describe a wooden chest, the contents of the treasure, the belongings sold, a fence or a visible seller. Those details are artistic devices to make the three actions clear. A jug and blanket represent possessions, rather than an inventory given in Scripture. The first picture freezes the moment of discovery before the treasure is hidden again. Do not turn the parable into instructions about taking valuables found on someone else’s property.
