These sheets use simple cartoon outlines and open areas for crayons or colored pencils. Each design is a separate printable, so you can choose the moment that suits your lesson.
Read Matthew 13:45-46 for the complete account. The following is a shortened summary in our own words.
Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven to a merchant searching for fine pearls. When the merchant finds one pearl of great value, he goes away, sells all that he has and buys it.
The story highlights the exceptional value of what he has found and his response. These three sheets follow the search, the discovery and the purchase. Read the accompanying verse carefully: the merchant also sells everything before buying the pearl, although that sale is not shown as a separate sheet.
The Hidden Treasure parable comes immediately before this one. They share the theme of great value, but one concerns a man finding treasure in a field and the other a merchant looking for pearls.
Color the three scenes in order. Make a large paper pearl and use it to recall the merchant’s search and response. Compare this story with the Hidden Treasure collection: what is similar, and what is different? Ask children what the stories say about the value of God’s kingdom.
Pearls are enlarged for easy recognition and coloring. The merchant’s appearance, a table, a box, a seller and the money pouch are artistic choices not specified in the text. Jesus does not describe diving for pearls or opening an oyster, so those events are not added to the storyline. This parable is not a promise of material wealth or a suggestion that God’s kingdom can be bought with money.
