Read Matthew 13:31-32 for the complete account. The following is a shortened summary in our own words.
Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven to a mustard seed that a man took and planted in his field. He described the seed as very small, but said that when it grows it becomes greater than the garden plants and becomes a tree. Birds come and lodge in its branches.
The comparison draws attention to a small beginning and a much larger result. Keep the lesson centered on Jesus’ description of the kingdom of heaven. This passage is different from his teaching about faith like a mustard seed in Matthew 17:20.
Color the pages from seed to tree. Compare a small seed with a larger plant outdoors or in a picture book. Use a large paper seed for young children and talk about the small beginning and larger growth in Jesus’ comparison. Keep the birds and branches in the final sheet as a reminder of the passage.
The seed and plant stages are enlarged and simplified so children can color them. The parable does not describe intermediate growth stages; the third sheet is an illustrative bridge between planting and the mature plant. The tree is a cartoon interpretation rather than a botanical identification. The nest is an illustrative detail, while the text says birds lodge in the branches. Avoid presenting this as a claim that mustard is the smallest seed known to modern botany.
