Read Matthew 7:24-27 for the complete account. The following is a shortened summary in our own words.
Jesus said that everyone who hears his words and does them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Rain fell, floods came and winds beat against the house, but it did not fall because its foundation was on rock.
He compared everyone who hears his words but does not do them to a foolish man who built his house on sand. Rain, floods and winds also struck that house. It fell, and its fall was great.
The difference is not that one builder avoided a storm. Both houses faced it. Jesus connects the firm foundation with hearing his teaching and acting on it. The pictures can help children remember that distinction.
Color the two building scenes first. Then place each storm picture beside its matching foundation. Ask children to name one teaching of Jesus they can put into practice, such as telling the truth or treating someone kindly. A parent can demonstrate stable and loose foundations with blocks on a tray.
The passage does not specify the houses’ architecture, the builders’ appearance or their construction tools. The simple stone houses are illustrative choices. The damaged-house sheet shows the result without people, animals or injuries. Do not interpret the story as a promise that faithful families will never experience hardship or damage to their homes.
